York Photographic Society Competition Rules
as settled by the Committee on 14 June 2005
under Article 20 of the Constitution adopted on 21 May 2003

1. The following Competitions shall be held during each Season –
-
the Monochrome Print Competition;
-
the Colour Print Competition;
-
the Projected Transparencies Competition;
-
the Projected Digital Images Competition;
-
the Small Print Competition;
-
the L Leatt Cup Competition; and
-
the John Saville Rose Bowl Competition.
The Monochrome Print and the Colour Print Competitions
2.-(1) A maximum of six entries may be submitted for the Monochrome Print and the Colour Print Competitions taken together.
(2) For the purposes of these Competitions –
(a) a print is a monochrome print if throughout the tonal range the image is of shades of grey or of one colour only; and
(b) any other print is a colour print.
Projected Images Competitions
3.-(1) A maximum of six entries may be submitted for the Projected Transparencies and the Projected Digital Images Competitions taken together.
(2) A projected transparency shall be mounted in a 5cm x 5cm slide mount which may be glass or glassless.
(3) The mount of a projected transparency, when viewed right way round but inverted –
(a) shall be spotted in the top right-hand corner; and
(b) shall bear, legible way up, the number assigned to the Member for the purposes of Competitions above the image and the title below the image.
(4) A projected digital image shall be submitted on 3.5” floppy disk or a CD in jpeg format with a maximum resolution of 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high.
The Small Print Competition
4.-(1) A maximum of four entries may be submitted for the Small Print Competition.
(2) No Member who has, at any time, been a member for more than a total of four years of the Society or of any other club or society affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain shall submit an entry for the Competition.
(3) The perimeter of the visible image area of a print shall not exceed 75cm.
The L Leatt Cup Competition
5.-(1) The L Leatt Cup shall be awarded for a panel of three separate prints on a common theme, topic or concept.
(2) A maximum of three panels may be submitted for the L Leatt Cup Competition.
(3 The three prints comprising a panel may be on one, two or three sheets of paper and shall be on a single mount not exceeding 20” x 25” or on three mounts none of which shall exceed 16” x 20”.
The John Saville Rose Bowl Competition
6.-(1) The John Saville Rose Bowl shall be awarded for a print or projected image depicting some aspect of life or a feature within the City of York .
(2) The John Saville Rose Bowl Competition,
(a) in the 2005-06 Season, shall be for projected images and, in the 2006-07 Season, shall be for prints; and
(b) in successive Seasons, shall be for projected images and for prints alternately.
(3) Entries for the Competition shall be included among those submitted in the Print Competitions or in the Projected Images Competitions, as the case may be, and awards for it shall be in addition to those for the other Competitions.
(4) A maximum of four prints or, as the case may be, projected images may be submitted.
(5) Entries shall be indicated by a letter ‘Y' in the appropriate entry form and on the entry itself.
Entries for the Competitions
Entries to be Member's work
7.-(1) All entries must have originated as photographs taken by the Member submitting them.
Entries may have been trade processed.
Entries to be new work
8. No image which has gained an award in any of the Society's Competitions in the same or a previous Season shall be eligible for submission in any subsequent Competition.
Prints to be mounted
9.-(1) Save in the L Leatt Cup Competition (as to which see rule 5(3)) prints shall be on mounts not exceeding 16” x 20”.
(2) Prints may be on mounts of any colour and shall not be framed.
Entries to be titled
A Member shall assign a title to each entry in a Competition which,
(a) in the case of a print, shall be marked on the back of the mount;
(b) in the case of a projected transparency, shall be marked on the mount in accordance with Rule 3(3); and
(c) in the case of a projected digital image, shall be marked on the disk on which it is submitted.
Anonymity of entries
11. All entries must bear the number assigned to the Member for the purposes of the Society's Competitions during the relevant Season and the name of the Member submitting an entry must not appear on the entry.
Submission of entries
12. A Member wishing to submit an entry for any Competition must complete an entry form supplied by the Society and submit it with the entry or entries to the Print Secretary or the Projected Images Secretary, as appropriate, not later than the date specified for that purpose in the Programme for the Season unless the appropriate Secretary, at his or her absolute discretion, agrees to late submission.
Judging of the Competitions and Awards
Judges and their functions
13-(1) Each Competition shall be judged in accordance with these Rules by a Judge appointed by the Committee on a date specified in the Programme for the Season and the name of the Judge shall, if practicable, be stated in the Programme.
Entries shall be furnished to the Judge in random order. The Judge -
(a) shall assign a first place in each Competition, and
(b) save in the John Saville Rose Bowl Competition, shall assign second and third places and, in his or her discretion, certificates of merit to other entries:
Provided that if, in the opinion of the Judge, entries are not of sufficient quality, any or all of the awards available in any Competition may be withheld.
(4) The decisions of the Judge shall be final.
Certificates and trophies
14.-(1) In each Competition a certificate shall be awarded to each Member to whom an award is assigned by the Judge.
(2) In each Competition (other than the John Saville Rose Bowl Competition) a trophy shall be awarded to each of the Members placed first, second and third by the Judge.
(3) All such trophies, the John Saville Rose Bowl and the L Leatt Cup remain the property of the Society and shall be returned to the Committee before the date fixed for presentation of awards in the Season following that in which they were awarded.
General
Commencement and Interpretation
15.-(1) These Rules shall come into force on 1 September 2005 and supersede the Rules relating to the Society's Annual Competitions settled by the Committee on 14 April 2004 , which are revoked.
(2) Expressions used in these Rules and in the Constitution adopted on 21 May 2003 shall have the same meanings as they have in that Constitution.
NOTE
These Rules are the same as the Competition Rules 2004 with the following changes of substance:
Rule 7 is simplified and is now explicit that entries may be trade processed.
Rules 13(3) and 14(2) now make provision for the award of second and third places in all competitions except that for the John Saville Rose Bowl. |
